JCC Highlights and Challenges

The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCC) Co-Chairs meetings provide a forum for cross-committee discussion, to promote strategic alignment with JCC Principles, advance core committee mandates and to provide oversight, direction and create alignment on shared initiatives.

Through leadership from each organization (Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health), the Physician Services Committee (PSC) provides guidance, monitors the activities and oversees the work of the JCCs.

Key highlights are captured after each meeting and are available, as below:

June 2025

The JCC Co-Chairs met on June 10, 2025.
- Presentations and updates were received regarding the work of the JCC Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) Committee, progress and evaluation of the Compassionate Leadership training program, and plans for the June 23 Physician Services Committee (PSC) JCC ISAR Workshop.
- The table met with the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to explore opportunities for provincial ISAR and Cultural Safety training.
- The JCC Co-Chairs approved the June 23 PSC JCC ISAR Workshop agenda.
- Approval was also provided for the September 8 in-person PSC/JCC Collaborative Workshop to be held in Vancouver to reduce the travel burden for rural physicians. All voting and non-voting Joint Collaborative Committee members will be invited to participate in the September session.
- The JCC Co-Chairs approved a request from the University of British Columbia Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) unit to carry over unspent BC Physician Integration Program funds from 2022-25 into their 2025-28 funding period, to further support the integration of International Medical Graduates into BC’s healthcare system.

JCC Co-Chair Milestones for June:
- Community-Based Experiential Learning: On June 11, an experiential learning session was held in collaboration with Ktunaxa First Nation (Cranbrook). Thirty-one participants, including 13 physicians, attended.
- Webinars in Partnership with UBC CPD: On June 18, the “Creating Safe Spaces for Indigenous Patients in Primary Care” webinar was held with 308 attendees, including 60 physicians.

May 2025

The JCC co-chairs did not meet in May.

April 2025

The April 8, 2025 JCC co-chairs meeting was cancelled due to the Estimates Debate.

JCC Co-Chair Milestones for April:
- In collaboration with Len Pierre Consulting, the JCCs held an Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) and Cultural Safety Community-Based Experiential Learning Session on April 2 in West Vancouver, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh First Nation. The session was attended by 44 participants, including 24 physicians (15 FPs and nine SPs).
- On April 15, a third gathering was held to support Physician Champions working in Indigenous Health Contexts. The virtual event was attended by 18 individuals, including 11 physicians (nine FPs and two SPs) who work in First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities or have a largely Indigenous patient panel. A survey was recently circulated to the group regarding their clinical experiences and current practices to better understand the strengths, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The results will be shared in the next report.

March 2025

The March 4, 2025 JCC co-chairs meeting was cancelled due to a conflict with the date of the BC Budget being released.

JCC Co-Chair Milestones for March:
- On February 18, a virtual gathering was held to support Physician Champions working in Indigenous Health Contexts. The event was attended by 15 attendees, including 10 physicians (seven family physicians (FPs) and three specialist physicians (SPs)) who work in First Nations communities or have a largely Indigenous patient panel. This was the second gathering where colleagues came together to offer peer support, problem-solve, and address common challenges.A JCC Indigenous Specific Anti Racism (ISAR) and Cultural Safety Community-Based Experiential Learning Session was held in Surrey Central on February 12. The session was attended by 32 individuals, including 16 physicians (seven FPs and nine SPs).
- The UBC CPD webinar ‘Providing Culturally Safe Care for Inuit’, which took place on March 19, was attended by 123 participants, including 69 physicians (47 FPs and 22 SPs), 10 nurses, seven midwives, 16 allied health professionals, one resident, one student, and 19 other representatives and professionals. An additional 41 registrants viewed the webinar via the recording.

January 2025

The JCC co-chairs met on January 14, 2025.
- A communications strategy for the October 2025 JCC Conference was approved, with a focus on showcasing and celebrating the successes and value of the JCCs for physicians, patients, and partner organizations.
- The JCC co-chairs approved hosting a PSC/JCC Collaborative workshop in June 2025. Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism was suggested as an agenda topic. Potential meeting dates are being explored.
- The co-chairs of the Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) and Cultural Safety (CS) Physician Specific Committee presented to the JCC co-chairs, and the table discussed opportunities for connection and collaboration, enhancing their provincial initiatives, and identifying effective communication pathways.
- Updates on the development of the JCC Evaluation and Measurement Plan were shared. This plan focuses on developing an “Impact Guide” to better evaluate and report on how JCC work is advancing the quintuple aim. A clear scope and vision for the work is being developed.
- Reichert and Associates presented an evaluation plan for the Compassionate Leadership Training program. The plan, which includes conducting a culturally safe evaluation, aims to assess the program’s implementation, outcomes, and lessons learned from the recent contract. The evaluation is scheduled to be completed by May.
On November 29, 25 attendees, including 16 ISAR and Cultural Safety Physician Champions, gathered in Vancouver to hear presentations from Dr Shirley Sze on the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Community of Practice (CoP) Model and from speaker Kory Wilson, who explored accomplices vs. allies. The group discussed appropriate models for their ongoing work and identified a desire to move forward with an ISAR CoP.
