The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs) are excited to welcome back Len Pierre Consulting for a webinar that will explore the link between colonialism and Indigenous health and social inequities with a focus on the toxic drug crisis and its impact on Indigenous communities today.

Participants will discuss the origins of prohibition in Canada, strategies to address stigmas associated with substance use, examine culturally safer language, and Indigenous perspectives on harm reduction.

Main learning ideas:

  • Identify the link between substance use harm and prohibition policies in Canada.
  • Discuss the root causes of addiction and substance use among Indigenous peoples.
  • Discuss Indigenous perspectives on harm reduction, de-stigmatization, and compassionate responses to the toxic drug crisis.

Keynote Presenter

Len Pierre

Len Pierre is Coast Salish from Katzie (kate-zee) First Nation. Len is an educator, consultant, TEDx Speaker, social activist, change agent, & traditional knowledge keeper. He has a master’s degree in education from Simon Fraser University focusing on Indigenous curriculum and instructional design. His experience includes Indigenous education and program leadership from various organizations across colonial Canada.

He specializes in the development of educational programs and services with decolonization and reconciliation as its core values.
