Shared Care welcomed new member Alayna Payne, Guest Representative, Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC (NNPBC), replacing Angela Wignall, who has become NNPBC’s CEO.
At the request of the SCC, a report and presentation were received from Hale Health Solutions, who explored the clinical realities and ideal experiences of family physicians and specialists accessing and responding to consultative advice requests. Through two facilitated workshops, participants shared insights into systemic barriers and clinical requirements for a future provincial consultative advice system. Next steps will include surfacing the findings and recommendations to the JCC Co-Chairs and other leadership tables.
Funding was approved to upgrade the current Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) application.
The committee approved 14 Shared Care Projects, reviewed by the Cancer Advisory Group, to be funded through the Cancer Call for Proposals initiative.
The Committee approved six Shared Care Projects with the following themes: pregnancy and newborn care (two), mental health and substance use (one), and seniors care (three). Four Projects did not receive immediate approval and will need to review/adjust their proposals before returning to the committee for additional review.
Six EOIs were approved through the review panel, with the following themes: pregnancy and newborn care (one), mental health and substance use (one), seniors care (one), emergency (one), ISAR (one), and special populations (one).

The SCC met on June 24, 2025.
Through the SCC co-chairs, approval was provided to the Physician Health Program (PHP) to develop local physician peer support programs at two additional sites. The Provincial Physician Peer Support Initiative (PSI) is already supporting 15-16 physician organizations in developing local peer support programs.

Reviewed by the SCC’s Review Panel, the SCC approved the following project Expressions of Interest:

Northern BC – Fracture Risk Assessment (with feedback).
UBC CPD – Child and Youth ADHD Care Pathway Development.
Victoria – Streamlining Skin Health Pathways (with feedback).
PHSA – BC Collaborative to Reduce Unnecessary C-sections.
With the support of Evaluation consultants, committee members facilitated a breakout discussion to explore and identify key nodes, connections, and exchanges in the JCC network ecosystem.
Updates were provided on the Physician Leadership Scholarship Program (PLSP). Program applications reopened on April 7, 2025, with some changes to ensure sustainability, including a reduction in the annual allotment per applicant, a lifetime policy for the master’s program, and operational updates to improve services and reduce the administrative burden. These program changes have resulted in the creation of 277 additional opportunities for new physicians to participate in the program.

The SCC met on April 29, 2025:
The Perinatal Community of Practice (CoP) and the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) CoP presented an update on their respective FY2025-26 workplans.
Staff provided an update on the 15 Cancer Care project Expressions of Interest previously approved by SCC. These applicants will submit full project proposals in July. The SCC delegated the authority to approve the full project proposals and funding to the Cancer Advisory Committee.
The SCC endorsed the revised Terms of Reference for the UBC-Sauder Physician Leadership Program Advisory Board. A process was launched to solicit two physician members and two Ministry of Health representatives to sit at this table.

SCC Milestones for May:
Project Completed: The South Okanagan Similkameen Division of Family Practice successfully completed its Mental Health and Substance Use project, which achieved its aims and has improved access to sustainable, patient-centred care for individuals with moderate to severe Mental Health and Substance Use challenges.
April 2025
The SCC met on March 25, 2025.
The co-chairs finalized approval of two SCC Project Funding Proposals at their March 18, 2025, meeting: Surrey-North Delta – Optimizing Neurology and Ridge Meadows – Radiology Excellence Bridging Care Gaps. These proposals had previously received substantial committee feedback, which needed to be addressed prior to the projects receiving approval.
The committee approved a health authority proportional funding model to support Spreading QI for Shared Care and the PQI Alum Initiative. The overall budget had previously been approved through the 2025-26 SCC Workplan and Budget.
Dr Daisy Dulay, Health Data Coalition (HDC) board member, and Dr Cole Stanley, HDC medical director, presented an overview of the HDC, and facilitated a discussion on the potential uses for HDC data in Shared Care projects and the next steps to collaborate to improve measurements and outcomes.
Guest presenters from the Nanaimo Division of Family Practice, Dr Adam Hoverman, Physician Lead, Social Prescribing, Beccy Robson, Executive Director, and Kirsten Schuld, Project Lead, Social Prescribing, joined the meeting to present an update on the Social Prescribing project in Nanaimo.
February 2025
The SCC met on February 25, 2025.
Beginning April 1, 2025, the SCC approved a maximum reimbursement of $5,000 CAD for Physician Leadership Scholarship Program (PLSP) courses, conferences, and coaching. The maximum reimbursement for Master’s Degrees remains unchanged, and program spending will be monitored and shared.
SCC approved 11 new Shared Care project Expressions of Interest, and four new full project proposals.
Arthritis Research Canada (administrative fundholder) successfully completed its project – Navigating the Maze: Supporting Family Physicians in the Diagnosis, Management, and Referral of Acute Knee Injuries. The physician Project Lead for this work was Dr Karin Kausky.
South Okanagan Similkameen Division successfully completed its Mental Health and Substance Use project. Significant learnings were achieved, including from the Prescribed Safer Supply Pilot Program and the FP/SP Dyad to support complex prescribing and patient attachment. Drs Driaan van der Vyver and Kyle Stevens were the physician project leads for this work.

The Shared Care Committee met on January 28, 2025:
The SCC approved an increase to the funding allocated to support cancer initiatives for 2025-26, including an increase of $300,000 to expand the number of Cancer Call for Proposals from 15 to 18, and allocation of additional funds to support the development of a JCC Cancer Care Unified Plan.
The SCC approved a change in the scope of the CBT Spread initiative, to provide enhanced training for 73 facilitators from the original target of 100. Additional unspent funds from the CBT initiative budget will be allocated to Mind Space to extend the initiative’s duration to December 31, 2026.
Due to a surge in physician applications for the Physician Leadership Scholarship Program (PLSP) in 2024-25, the SCC is considering potential changes to the program’s funding criteria and additional limits that may need to be implemented in order to manage demand within the allocated budget.
